Sun Rise at Sripada

My younger brother badly needed to climb Sripada as he had not gone there ever. Finally he was able to( of course with my help :)) convince our parents to organize a small trip. My main intention was to see the Sun rise ("Ira sevaya" in Sinhala) at sripada as I couldn't see it last time due to heavy rain and the cloudy sky. This time we were lucky to see the beauty of sun rise though the sky was cloudy. The sun rise at SriPada is not like a normal sun rise. It comes up and goes down several times while rising.

Sripada is just like a heaven where we can walk through the clouds and feel the origin of rain.

  1. AFAIK this effect is due to the change in refractive index of layers of air with the sun rise.

at the begining the lower lateys of air that are close to the earth surface are cooler that the outer ones so the density of the lower layers are high

but in few seconds/min when the surface and the lower layers become hotter the difference of densities between lower air layers and upper layers become small.
(try to imagine the diagrams that we draw in AL physics in section light ;) )

that's is the reason for this suns crazy behaviour.
    JUST FYI ;)

  2. Unfortunately it is hard to catch the ඉර සේවය in any media. I tried taking pictures and videoing it. The real effect of it is always lost.

ඉර සේවය (ira sewaya) is the effect of sun appearing to be going up and does the horizon (no doubt bcos of the reasons charith explained) to respect the සිරිපා පතුල (siripa pathula). What is truly amazing and beauty in the shape of the sun, and how it changes before it comepletely rises from the horizon. For this to really see sky in that section needs to be really really clear.

After the sunrise you get yo next treat. look around you. look at the monutains close by and mountains far away. the beauty of that I have never seen in at least a artificial landscapes. Makes you wish to stay there for few more minutes (unfortunately this also finishes after abt 30 mins. Then the shows over)

  3. Hi Charith, thanks for the info :) Im still curious why we can't see that effect in a sun rise at eastern coast. Actually I'am not sure about the exact reason.

Yes Saminda, I forgot to mention about the effects after the sun rise. One is the shadow pyramid.

You can see the pyramid here but not ira sevaya. Yeah it's not possible to find it in any media. Your own eyes must do.
